Have second with 3.1 on it. It has been along time since using 3.1. Forgot alot. I go into Dir it says win95 (dir). What does this mean? I feel like all is not in the 3.1 I have. I can't find file manger (I thought there was one) Anyway I tried to Run setup again. won't let me. Says I need different path. I just want to reinstall. What do I do? How do you open autoexec files. I type C:\autoexec.bat, I see files for about one second then it goes to loading windows. Thank for your help

Hi David: This is just a guess, but did you install Win 3.1 over Win 95? You need to start by having both DOS 5 or higher & Win 3.1 install disks, then either format drive or use del & deltree commands to remove directories autoexec & config files to do a clean install. One other thing to be aware of is that your hard drive needs to use FAT 16 not FAT 32 for older DOS & Win 3.1 to work. If you want to see info in autoexec & config files, use the command c:/edit autoexec.bat or c:/edit config.sys to make changes if needed. To start File Manager (if no icon) use the Run winfile.exe command in Windows directory, then reduce size of File Manager & drag & drop the winfile.exe file to Program Manager to create a link & icon. One last thing, you can also edit autoexec.bat & config.sys by using sysedit.exe in windows\system directory.
