Hi;

I have installed windows 3.1 on a 75mhz laptop, which works fine.
I want to record speech on this machine, and donīt know what drivers or additional software to use.

Can someone give a hint?

Patrick

Most Pentium I laptops don't have a sound card, so you wouldn't be able to do any sound recording or playback. I don't know if there's a thing as a PCMCIA sound card, but if there is, you'll have to buy it to do sound processing.

A 120 Mhz Gateway laptop that I used to use at work had a built-in soundcard. If you don't have a sound card you can look for PCMCIA sound cards on EBAY.

Occasionally You can find an old parallel port sound card up there. They weren't high quality but they work and are much cheaper than PCMCIA cards.

As far as software, you can just use the Win 3.1 sound recorder.

You will find that wave files get very big in a hurry, so will probably have to record at 8 bit mono, 11 or 22 Mhz to keep the size down unless you have a really big hard drive.

Then maybe convert your recordings to MP3s or some other condensed music form.

Good luck

I went a diffrent path:

I just recorded speech on my win 98 system using creative Sound Blaster software and a low performance microphone; needless to sav quality is low, but it works, whixh gives me some confidence.

Improving Quality and installing recording option on laptop might still take some time, but Iīm confident.

As far as the Windows 3.1x sofware to use:

I use Soundforge 3.0 (which came with my Gravis Ultrasound PnP) for stereo recordings.
I also have Zadok Winaudio Fun (payed only 4 dollar for that). Its can record 4 tracks (but I havent tried yet).
I also have a Terratec Maestro soundcard which has some version of Cubase with harddiskrecording possibilities.

These programs are not free, but you must be able to get them.
I got them cheap so......

Mind you I was (and I still am ;-) able to do stereo harddiskrecording with my GUS PnP at 16-bit 44 kHz.
The quality is superb, but hey its a GUS ;-)
