I tried to up date to 3.11 and get the messages "Win3.11 can only be updated from Win3.0 or higher on this system. The orginnal OS was a prepritary Win3.1 of which I no longer have. The hd has been refromatted & I've tired to install Win3.1, 3.11 fresh and as an upgrade to DOS6.22 with all giving me the same error. Any ideas on how I can get either of the Windows OS on it? I don't have any of the orginal setup disks

Did you install DOS first? You need to install DOS before you can install any version of windows 3.11 or older.

If you are still working on this problem:
The windows installation may be an upgrade...
Since DOS is now installed:
1) Delete the failed previous install of c:\windows (use: deltree c:\windows )
2) Type MD c:\windows
3) Change to Windows directory: cd\windows
4) Type EDIT WIN.COM (type anything you want here or nothing - save the file.)
5) Install Windows. ( Type A:\SETUP )Some installs look for previous version sometimes. Checks for a WIN.COM file in the windows directory.
Good Luck.

This is what I found from the help files of Win3.1 and 3.11:
AT&T(R) Safari Computer
-----------------------
If you have an AT&T Safari computer, you cannot maintain two versions of
Windows on your system. You must upgrade over your previous version of
Windows, if you have one. If you set up Windows for Workgroups version 3.11
in its own directory, it will not use the special drivers required to run on the Safari
computer.
My problem is the hd was formatted & I don't have any of the orginal disks. The way this reads, it sounds like it's a prepritary system and I need to have the orignal software.

I finally got Win3.11 back on and even able to pop the modem. For those that may need to install from a fresh hd.
1)Turn off system & video shadowing.
2)Install DOS6.22 without the suppliment
3)Install Windows 3.0
4)Install Win3.11 in the same folder (windows) as 3.0
