I have suffered with general protection fault errors for years. My computer has been to the computer shop and the tech reconfigured it. It did help, but it still did not totally stop the general protection fault errors. I have tried just about all sugestions that I have gotton from newsgroups, forums, support groups ect but I still get them. Is there any way to stop these errors are is this just life with Windows. I have twice gotten the error today NETSCAPE HAS CAUSED A GENERAL PROTECTION FAULT ERROR IN THE DIALER. AND THEN LOCKED UP. I can reinstall Netscape & Windows like I have done time & time again. Will run good for about 4 weeks and they return again. Can someone please list for me some stable operating system. For all I have ever used besides Windows is Dos, which I think is pretty stable.

Which Windows maintenance software package are you using?

1. Nuts & Bolts by Mcafee
2. Norton Utilities
3. Ontrack's System Suite

or do you use another Windows maintenace software?

it's hard to give you advice without knowing which Windows tune-up software you're using.
If you aren't using one of the above software packages, then that is your problem. The primary use for Windows tune-up software is registry maintenace. Outdated or conflicting registry commands cause most GPF's (in my humble opinion) with the second major cause of GPF's being incorrectly installed video drivers.

I'm had the same trouble.With Win 98 &
internet explorer.
My system finalley crashed + a dead modem.
Well it crashed whin i tried to restore some files.
I formated the hard drive and reinstalled it all myself. Then had the modem replased.
The copy of windows on my system must had errors.I have had trouble from the time I got the system.
Now it's trouble free.
I think it's time for a format .

I had been using Nuts & Bolts by Mcafee until a couple of months ago when it stopped working. It continually found piles of disk errors on my hard drive. I had this program called bomb shelter active, which came with nuts & bolts which stated if the computer crashed, I could continue working, & I could after a crash. That only lasted so long until it stopped working. I ran pctools diskfix which ran all night long & I found out I had 15 media defects on the drive. I replaced the hard drive & havent gotton around to installing it again. I guess I will install it sometime today. I still got the general protection fault errors with Nuts & bolts it just allowed me to continue working instead of me having to reboot my machine.

Win 3.1 is about as unstable as you can get. I left it behind in the dust where it belongs.

I have used win 3.1 for years. I have never noticed it being unstable except on the Internet.
