I'm thinking on changing some components of my computer. I'm going to increase the amout of memory (256 in minnimum), upgrading Win98 to WinXP, changing my mound card and maybe my graphics card.
Graphics card is going to be Geforce4 MX. My current graphics card doesn't have a Win3.1 driver either, but i think the patched SVGA driver that works with my SiS 730 will work with this. If not i'm going to switch back to vga.
Sound card is what I want to be fully compatible with Win3.11 and Win XP the same time. Cannot be ISA, must be PCI, because my motherboard doesn't have any ISA slots. And must be able to play up to 48khz (like the one I have now), unlike the old soundblaster 16/awe 32, that can only play up to 44khz. And I want it to have decent soundd quality.
I'd really apreciate if someone could help me choose a card.

I wish i'd had the chance to try the patched
driver with my Geforce4 MX..it's gone now so
no way to find out.Couldn't get it working
with w31 in hi-res while i had it ..(there's
old posts on this forum about this, in
fact...)
If i really wanted to make sure i had a
hi-end card compatible with Win31, tho, i'd
spend all my time looking for drivers, not
cards, and once i found a driver that would
run the card with the highest specs i could
find, i'd start looking for the card.
Same with a sound card..but forget PCI..i
guarantee (well, OK, 99%) you'll have no joy
there.
And, frankly, forgive me , but 44KH is
absolutely decent for win31 or any other 16
bit bus system...there isn't a soundcard in
existence that doesn't benifit greatly by
being run into a decent external audio
system anyways..that's the way to go, i
would think.

I'd focus on a compatible graphics card....

I have the Ensoniq Audio PCI card myself and some (equivalent) Creative Soundblaster 64 cards and I think they can run both in 3.1x and XP but I am not sure if they can do 48 kHz.

In case u cannot find the driver its name is:
apiwiz31.exe
This driver is for the Ensoniq and in my own collection of drivers i cannot seem to find the Soundblaster driver (but finding Soundblaster drivers even on the Creative website is a real pain in the ... anyway)

One other comment: Although I have some (ISA and 3.1x compatible) cards that can do 48 kHz stereo the difference in soundquality compared to 44 kHz is minimal.

Thanks, I'm going to find information about the card to see if it is compatible win Windows 3.11

Although I have some (ISA and 3.1x compatible) cards that can do 48 kHz stereo the difference in soundquality compared to 44 kHz is minimal.

My problem with cards able to play up to 44khz stereo samples is that I have some 48khz mp3 files that won't play correctly unless I use a card able of playing at this frequence...
