I have a system that has Internet Explorer/Outlook Express 5 installed. I'm considering adding IE 3.03 to this system, but need to know, if I use the custom install and only install the browser, (in a separate folder) will I still mess up the IE5 installation?

Hi PC Freak:
I would either leave IE5 & not install IE3 (my guess is you will have problems trying to make Windows go backwards to IE3). I run IE5.5 & Netscape 4.75 without any problem, don't understand why you want to run an older MS browser since it is so embedded into the OS. I think if you try to install IE3 it will try to change some of IE5s files & cause IE5 to have problems.Good luck.

Umm... IE 5.5 and Netscape 4.75? On Windows 3.1? IE isn't nearly as embedded in 3.1 as it is in 9x. This system currently has IE 5.0 and Netscape 4.08. The reason I want to add IE 3.03 is because it runs faster on this system than IE5, and would be perfect for things like browsing this site.

Hello PC freak. On my old 486 dx2 66 with 20 Megs of RAM, i have IE 3.03, IE 5.0 and Netscape 4.08 all installed together, and they run perfectly well. The only thing is you might have to uninstall IE 5 before installing IE 3.03, then reinstall IE 5 afterward, but maybe not if you custom install and install only the browser as you suggested. In my case i had installed IE 3.03 before. I have IE 3.03 in the c:\iexplore folder, and IE 5.0 in the c:\msie50 folder. In any case, make sure you only install one dialer. One interesting thing that happened after i installed IE 5.0, i ran the security update for IE 5.0 that i think you have on your website (se128-16.exe i think it is), and it also fixed ie 3.03 so i could access secure sites that i couldn't before because of outdated certificates. And yes, you are right, IE 3.03 is a good deal faster, and pretty good for regular browsing. Good luck.

Thanks for the help. I'll try it out and post back with the results. Also, strange and interesting with the IE3 security thing. I wonder if that'll work after I install 3.03 on my system. (IE5 already has the security updates installed)

After installing, IE3 started fine. I then close it and started IE5, which seemed to work fine. After that, now IE3 doesn't start... I get a "call to undefined dynalink" error, then a GPF which kills Windows... Oh well. I'll deal with it later. I just took the modem out of this PC (was the only one I had that Linux would agree with), so it doesn't have internet access right now anyway. Thanks for the help.

The problem may be related to IE3 replacing files that IE5 also uses with older ones. It all depends if the IE3 setup overwrites the newer files with older ones or not. I remember now why the se128-16.exe fixed ie3 as well, it's simply because both versions of IE will use the same security files (meaning same name). These files are located in the c:\windows\system directory, and are stated in the [SSPI] section of the win.ini file. But it's easy to fix, you simply have to run the se128-16.exe again, and things should get back to normal, fixing IE3 in the process.
But if this isn't enough, reinstalling IE5 might be required. Remember i told you i installed IE3 first, then IE5, and only then did i run the security update file. Done in the right order, i assure you it will work, so don't give up just yet
Lightspeed.
