OS: Windows 3.1
CPU/Ram: 80386 / 6 Megabytes Ram
Comment:

I have an IBM Personal System 2 that has
been showing the 162 and 163 error codes for
awhile. I got a Dos 6.0 bootdisk which seemed to work fine at first. But then I couldn't access my C Drive. I typed in all
the DOS commands I knew but was unable to find any information about my C Drive other than basic Ram numbers. Since I originally had DOS 5.0, I got a DOS 5 Bootdisk but
had the same problem. Since I cannot access
C:, I cannot get into Windows.
Is it possible that my Hard Drive was accidentally erased and if so, can my files
be recovered?

Chances are your data is intact. Sounds like may be a battery dead issue on your motherboard. Try this url:

http://www-1.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?rs=0&q=162%2c+163+error+codes&uid=psg1JBAR-46JRMV&loc=en_US&cs=utf-8&cc=us&lang=en

Just glanced at it but they suggest a bad floppy drive etc.

Have the run configuration setup, to make sure the drive is recognised in BIOS.

I believe for most PS/2 you can download a bootable configuration floppy!

you could have a boot sector virus, i have one and it keeps me from accessing my hard drive from a boot disk if you can boot from the hard drive do it and back up your data then clean it with a virus scanner on another computer with macafee or norton i recomend norton then format the hard drive reinstall dos

important!: make sure you have dos backed up or have install disks!
