Some time ago, a call for help was posted on this forum, regarding Write ("Write or Another Word Processor", on Feb. 15, 2007, by NintendoFan). Some observations I have made:
First of all, it is always possible to download the original write.exe file (http://www.laymanstraining.com/freeware.html). This is version 3.10.
Secondly, if you opt for using Write as your text editor, it would also be wise to install Spellwrite (http://www.freaked.org/win9x.html/#utilities). An excellent add-on, features spelling support (english language) and a toolbar that incorporates into Write whenever the program loads.A somewhat more difficult approach:
Use the Wordpad supplied with Windows 95! This very text is written in Wordpad 32-bit, running under Windows 3.11. Necesssary steps to follow (also generally described in http://stephan.win31.de/w32slist.htm):1. First of all, you should install Win 32s on your system (you need the file pw1118.exe. More information and download: http://stephan.win31.de/w32slist.htm. I suggest that you also upgrade the file shell32.dll that will be installed on your system after using pw1118.exe, with a new improved shell32.dll file. You need nwshl32.zip which you can also download from the site mentioned above).
2. Should you have access to an installation of Windows 95, find (and copy) the following files:
wordpad.exe
mfc30.dll
mfc30loc.dll
mfc40.dll
mfcans32.dll
mfcd30.dll
mfcn30.dll
mfco30.dll
mfco40.dll
mfcuia32.dll
riched32.dll3. Put all above files but riched32.dll into a single folder (say, c:\wordpad). Put riched32.dll into your %windows%\system directory.
4. You also need a special file, msvcrt20.dll, available for download from www.twain.org/devfiles/win32s.zip/win32s.zip. Put this file into c:\wordpad. You are ready to go...
In http://stephan.win31.de/w32slist.htm ("The Win32s compatibility list", maintained by Gaby Chaudry), Wordpad's "friendliness", when running under Win 3.x, is symbolised by :( and its "stability" is characterised as "not all that good". Main problems stated: "ruler doesn't work, crashes on opening / saving files (IIRC)". The ruler doesn't work, indeed; however, opening various text files (*.txt, *.wri, *.rtf, even *.doc) works quite well, without crashing. No file I have ever saved with Wordpad crashed, either! Only minor problems appear, which do not, generally, interfere with writing or saving text files.

How can you open Word DOC files without the converter (a .wpc file)? I have used Wordpad with Win3.11 as well, bus if I ever copied the converter file things started crashing.

Alexanrs:
Believe it or not,I was able to open in Wordpad *.doc files written in Word 6.0, after following the procedure I described above - this without installing any kind of converter whatsoever! To be frank, some *.doc files I opened came up with a lot of "garbage", i.e. strange, illegible characters - BUT THESE CHARACTERS WERE NOT PART OF THE ORIGINAL TEXT! They were just added, for some reason, by Wordpad, during the process of opening. The text itself, contained in the original Word 6.0 file, remained intact! Should you just erase the added, "garbage" characters, you could quite easily retrieve your original text...
