When I click on drive A in DOS it says General Failure Reading Drive A, Current drive is no longer valid and when I click on drive A in windows for workgroups 3.11 it says there is no disk in Drive A even when there is one. Also my MSD says windows 3.1 not active. What can I do? Thanks. would appreciate any help.

You probably need to adjust the settings in your Bios for the floppy drive.
Its normal that MSD reports windows 3.1 is not active because you're in DOS then....

Uhh try pressing the Del key or the Escape while booting. If that doesn't work F1 might do the trick....
