I'm guessing its the driver file for your graphics card - i dont know but i should think its a Cirrus 5434 card. It sounds as if the file is not present and Windows is looking for it. Search online for some Windows 3.1 cirrus 5434 drivers - im sure someone will be able to help you further.

Alex is correct about the Cirrus Logic video driver.

You didn't say if you get thrown into DOS or if the computer just freezes. At any rate, here is what you can do.

If your computer is set up to automatically boot into windows, then press the F8 key as the computer begins to boot up.

This will allow you to confirm each line of the CONFIG.sys and AUTOEXEC.bat before each line is loaded.

You can let every line get loaded for the CONFIG.sys.

When you get to the line by line loading of the AUTOEXEC.bat, the last line is the one you should say no to. It will probably be WIN or WIN.com.

Now you will be in DOS.

If you are at the C:\> prompt, then type

cd windows [ENTER]
type
setup [ENTER]
choose DISPLAY
select VGA as your driver

Then exit and save and restart the computer.

See if you boot into windows OK in 16 color mode.

If that works, then download the driver from
http://www.drivermuseum.com/files/drivers/vga_d.html

Unzip the 2 zip files to 2 floppies, and from Windows, double click the INSTALL.exe file from the first floppy and follow prompts from there.

Good luck

When you run SETUP.exe (the setup which must be ran from C:\Windows at the C: command line) you choose your new driver from the Display list - now i havent used Windows 3.1 for a few years now but i remember if it already finds a driver while you try to install your new one, you get two options: you can either use the driver it has already found or use the new one you are trying to install - try using the new one if you havent done. Can you get into Windows when using the normal driver called VGA? If you can, once you get into Windows, you can use the Windows Setup program (WINSETUP.EXE) which is somewhat easier to use than the MS-DOS one. Once in here, goto file, Change System Settings (?) then you should get a drop down list of Display drivers - select the Cirrus 5434 (with the color depth and screen resolution you want) and it should then install the drivers - restart windows and things *should* work!

Good luck

Thank you again Alex......but I think I know what the problem is....I was looking in the Packard Bell User's Guide at the Monitor hook up, I wanted to make sure the connection was ok, when I looked in the Guide it says that the monitor cable should be a DB15(15pin) male connector, when I looked at the cable and counted the pins, it looks like 3 pins are not there....there are 15 holes in the video display port....that's the problem...isn't it? Is my computer now worthless? Do I need to buy a new monitor? Any advice from anyone? Thanks...Heather

Your monitor is fine, no monitors have all the pins.

Did you try getting into windows after installing just the VGA driver?

From DOS if you type WIN, does that get you into Windows?

Do you have the WFWG installation disks? If all else fails, then boot up to DOS and stick disk 1 of your WFWG installation disks in the floppy. Type A:setup and reinstall windows.
