I am fixing a computer for someone. It is a 486 IBM, 16mb RAM, 250mb HD. When I boot up it goes into DOS and a bunch of the files are missing, such as C:\DOS\himem.sys and about 6 other files. They say Bad or Missing. It will not recoginize CD-Rom. I don't know exactly how to start in fixing it or if it is even worth it. Any one know?

Your english is fine. The main file that I need to be there is the HIMEM.SYS file. That one is for the cd-rom. If you have anymore suggestions could you just post them? I can't talk on the messenger right now. Thanks. Also do you know if it is possible to put Win 95 on this pc?

the himem.sys is not for the cd-ro. boot with dos 6.22 disk one. a:\sys c: that will transfer files to the c: to make it bootable. yes, win95 will run okay on that configuration

i have the himem.sys file. I will email it to you ass soon ass possible. And yes if you've got 16MB's of ram Windows95 will run fine ;-) You must have a minimum of 4MB so its plenty.

The best thing to do if you have dos & Windows 3.1 is to format & reinstall everything. I have done this many of times with used pc's I have gotten from auctions, ect. Also Himem.sys, as the person said above, is NOT for the cd-rom drive. If you don't believe this do a search on google or any search engine & it will tell you what himem.sys is for. Also the way you are talking you don't have any business trying to fix anyone's pc. I can tell you dont even have a basic knowledge of whats going on. You need to take it to a professional.
You say you dont know where to start or if it's worth fixing? There is nothing wrong with the pc as far as I can tell. Everything just needs to be reloaded. Your problem is very, very, minor.
