After giving it a rest for a few months I decided to try 3xstart one more time. I think i'm gonna pull out my hair! I never have had this much trouble installing software.

I got Windows 98 second edition FAT 32 7gig drive 64mb ram. Got a brand new floppy put it in floppy drive and went to add/remove programs and made a startup disk. Then added the 3xstart files to the disk, made me a directory named win311 and rebooted the computer with my startup disk/3xstart. I then typed 3xstart at the A:/ prompt choose 1 and it found the files and changed them successfuly. I then rebooted again with the same startup / 3xstart disk and setup windows 3.11 for workgroups choosing the win311 directory. No changes were made to the AUTOEXEC.BAT or CONFIG.SYS. When finished I choose reboot to dos went to the win311 directory typed win and i'll be damned if it said incompatiable version of dos. Does this work with 98 Second edition or just 98 and 95?? If it does work with 98 se then why did it appear to install fine make the w3xstart.bin and not let me run win 3.11 wfw? I am positive I followed every step in detail. It's has me stumped.

Anything I missed? Please help.

If you don't want so much trouble installing 3xstart, please download and install MS-DOS 7.10 Full Version(with installer) directly.

I read about Wengier and his 7.10 project, but without being offensive I doubt its legal.

So I think it would be better if an answer was given here for fixing the 3xstart problem that Chad apparently has.

I have never used 3xstart myself until now but before I do I would like to have the answer to avoid having the same problem......

It appears from your post that you have been using the Windows 98 bootdisk to start the computer. The IO.SYS on the bootdisk isn't patched with 3xstart. To make it work correctly you must remove the bootdisk and start DOS using the patched IO.SYS on the harddrive.HTH.

I agree with Marooma.

You create a Bootdisk as a safety backup only.

Start 3XSTART.exe from Drive A:\ and it will patch IO.SYS in your C:\ Drive Root Directory by default, making a safety backup copy of the original on the floppy disk.

Start your PC Without Bootdisk as normal.

Only if you have any very rare problems do you need to use the bootdisk and backup to restore your system.

No changes are made to any file other than the HEX patch to IO.SYS

3XSTART is available for download from my PowerLoad Resource Site (Link above)

AHH at last thank you Marooma that is what I was doing. I started the computer and shut down with the restart in dos mode did the ol cd win311 typed win and tada! Man does windows 3.11 scream on a 333Mhz.

Now to try and get my cd rom to work, and setup my network and sound cards. Mabey even fire up the old scsi cd burner in 3.x! Na it burns slow enough in 98.

How do I setup my cd rom network card and sound when using 3xStart? I've done it in a dos 6.22 win 3.11 setup but not in dos 7.

Now you are up and running with 3XSTART patched MS-DOS 7.10. You setup your CD-ROM and Sound just as you would have done in 6.22
If you have the setup disks just run them at the DOS prompt.
