I don't know why, but my WFW 3.11 is running too slow. I tried upgrading my RAM from 32 MB to 48 MB but not even a little change. I run Calmira and am using a Realtek driver for my Ethernet card and my config.sys loads ifshlp.sys, drivespace, and some other things like files and buffers. My autoexec loads Net Start, Path, and 1 or 2 other commands. When loading IE 3,4, or 5 they both load pages and browse them just as slow. When loading mIRC typing messages lags it a bit. I am running Ram Doubler and I know it's working because it says "Ram Doubled" at the bottom of my screen. Why is my computer running so slow?
Next, I can't seem to find a mouse driver that can get me to use my scroller.
Plus one small problem you don't have to answer, when installing IE4 the installation freezes when reaching 100% when only installing IE. I was able to extract the cab files by using extract.exe but I wanna know how I can get Active Setup to work in case my extract.exe gets lost or something

Try to install 95 or 98 also (multiple boot) on your machine.
I wouldn´t use ramdoubler in your case.
Another option is to reinstall....

Drivespace takes up some space in the RAM as well as slowing the system down during "any" disk access, including using the swap file as it has to be constantly decompressing and compressing data to the hard drive. I hope you do not keep any "critical" data on this system. Drivespace has been known to on rare ocasion crash and usually when it does data is lost.
I would suggest, just as a test you try running WFW 3.11 without the NIC. Your slowdown maybe something like a corrupted driver or not fully functional NIC. There is also the posibility that, that NIC takes up more CPU power than other NICs. I have heard of this happening. That is one of the reasons I use 3Com NICs as they are well known for minimal CPU usage to function.

Well, I tried loading windows using the /n switch, and I noticed only very little improvement, I mainlt found improvement when getting Windows loaded, probably because I'm not using the logon. So still no improvement. I also uncompressed my drive and still no improvement. I'll try looking for a RAM manager/booster in order to raise my CPU/RAM usage while in Windows. ANy suggestions?
BTW, I'm still looking for a working Intellimouse driver that can get my scroller and/or the extra 2 buttons working.

Tried that already. I've done almost every BIOS setting and still nothing. If it helps, the BIOS is an A05 Dell BIOS and the comuputer is a Dell Dimension XPS P90. Just to recap here.1. I have a 90 MHz Prossesor
2. 48 MB RAM
3. IE3 and 5 run slow (IE5 being the slowest) as well as many other programs.
4. I run Calmira
5. Use Cable modem and router to get online

http://cutemouse.sourceforge.net this is a DOS mouse driver and the latest version works with wheel mouse and very good it is too......

Very long post here, sorry....
Do you have 32-Bit Disk Access and/or 32-Bit File Access enabled? Are you using a permanent swap file of recommended size, located on an uncompressed disk volume? Is your disk cache set to at least 2048kb? I recommend you choose these in the Virtual Memory section of the 386 Enhanced settings in Control Panel.
Is your IE cache very large? My P120 16mb 3.11/Calmira/IE5 suffers when the cache has around 1200 files in that directory, which is what my cache holds when set to around 5-7mb of disk space. You may also wish to turn off image loading in your Advanced Options.
Other Windows tweaks may help speed up your system. Turn off any wallpaper you may have. Limit the amount of resource-eating Shortcuts on your desktop and/or create a folder with Aliases instead. Uninstall those large, exotic and unused fonts from your system. Using RamDoubler does incur a small performance penalty, but that is outweighed by the improvement it offers.
Do you have unnecessary programs loading via the WIN.INI 'run=' and 'load=' commands? Tweaking entries in SYSTEM.INI can yeild great improvement. I suggest trying the following; *some SYSTEM.INI entries already exist, some are new entries, you'll have to search for each to be sure you dont double up--
DMABufferSize=128
FileSysChange=off
HardDiskDMABuffer=64
KeyBoostTime=0.05
MaxBPs=768
PageBuffers=32
SyncTime=true
TrapTimerPorts=false
XlatBufferSize=128-- also check out the Windows 3.1 section of http://members.aol.com/axcel216/ ... it has some great performance tips.
As [hwood] mentioned in a prior post, Drivespace should be avoided unless absolutely necessary. I was one of those people who lost everything when I tried it. If you are low on disk space, buying another drive is the best option. A 2 gig HDD will cost you some loose change at best.
Version 2 of CuteMouse does support the wheel/scroll API, although I cant confirm that it works in Win3.x. Can anyone say their scroll mouse + CuteMouse works within 3.1?

I tried all your settings and found out that I only had FileSysChange in my System.ini file so I added in those settings and when restarted Windows the Calmira logo appeared faster than ever. I also added some of my own settings in Network options (turning off logon, Network DDE, etc) and it loads a LOT faster. IE doesn't seem to be much faster however and my other programs haven't seemed to have sped up much, so basically this sped up Windows itself but not the programs it runs. I'll check out that site you gave me and see if that helps too.And on Cutemouse ver 2, I loaded it and it told me that it loaded a scroll wheel PS/2 mouse but upon booting my mouse, pointer and all, did not work. I tried it with my Logitech and my Intellipoint, both USB optical mice but can be PS/2 with an adapter, but both gave the same results. I guess I'll just wait until there's a better version out.

Are you on a local network? If not you really dont need Net-start- itll slow you down , plus if youve got sharing enabled, that'll slow you down quite a bit too. The ramdoubler is not slowing you down,and in fact could be helping.
I think i mentioned about netstart in a previous post of yours, even. Just rem it out of your autoexec..i cant recall if i changed any other settings whien i did it myself, but i dont think so.

Unfortunatly, I need it because I am using a cable modem with a router. Is there any other replacement for it at all that takes up less memmory?

I dont know the answer to your last question, but i do know where i lived before i was hooked up to a router, and cable modem, and thats where i originally removed the net start, and it still all worked. So i dunno....
