Comment: I have a micron pc that is set up for win95.I have a 3.3 DOS boot disk and I have run a FDISK /MBR to delete/create a new partition. Windows installation goes fine but when I reboot HIMEM.SYS error happens. I know It is either the config.sys or a memory issue but I don't know what to do from here??

Reply: (edit)Why are you using a DOS 3.3 boot disk? If you have a machine with win95/98 up, create a boot disk through there for installation. DOS won't know about all the files necessary for windows. Also, If you are deleting a partition, you issue the FDISK command with NO variables. The /MBR is used to fix your master boot record. Such as if you have a boot loader from another OS, such as Linux or win2k and have removed it but the old loader tries to run even though it doesn't exist. If you use a DOS boot disk for this, it won't work. If you need a boot disk, try http://www.bootdisk.com

Reply: (edit)The machine was built for WIN 95, but I am trying to load WIN 3.11 on it, that's why I was using a DOS 3.3 boot disk. I need to load 3.1 for some electronic testing equipment. I am wondering if it is a hardware issue?

Reply: (edit)start with any boot disk (doesn't matter which one) and write "format c:" (without the quotes). Then insert a DOS install disk and install DOS, then Install Windows 3.11. As adomin1000 said, "FDISK /MBR" just writes over the master boot record (or MBR for short) that other operating systems (like Linux) writes over to be able to boot. to delete the partition you need to run just "FDISK" (without the /MBR switch) and then be guided through the program. Otherwise I dont think there's any hardware issues (maybe there would be if the computer was originally built for Windows XP with new hardware that there isn't any Win 3.11 drivers for)

Reply: (edit)The following should be in your config.sys Definately the first line, don't know about the rest. DEVICE=HIMEM.SYS /testmem:off FILES=30 BUFFERS=20 wfw is dos 6.22, advanced a bit, as opposed to dos 7(win9x)so possibly check your files aren't corrupt. different versions arent compatible, make sure to use wfw to sys C: I had a similiar problem with io.sys. have a look at http://computing.net/windows31/wwwboard/forum/9729.html Hope that helps

Reply: (edit)Windows 3.1/3.11 & Windows for Workgroups 3.1/3.11 (Yes there are two versions of both) are optimised for use with MS-DOS 5.0 onwards (better with 6.22)DOS 3.3 did not have HIMEM.SYS. fatmander - Windows for Workgroups has no DOS. What you mean is that it is designed for MS-DOS 6.22. And you need MS-DOS to SYS your harddrive not WFW or Windows 3.1 If you correctly install MS-DOS from an bootable disk set, followed by Windows 3x Setup your Autoexec.Bat & Config.Sys should be writton for you. All you nedd to do is ad WIN as the last line in Autoexec.Bat to automaticly start Windows. Windows 3x will work fine with MS-DOS 7.0 from Windows 95. But Microsoft 'Fixed' MS-DOS 7.10 from Windows 98 onwards not to run it! It installs fine, but will not start. You will find a fix called START3X on my PowerLoad site which patchs IO.SYS for this. I also offer bootdisks in any version from DOS 3.3 onwards - Including a MS-DOS 7.1 bootdisk which has been START3X patched for you which even reports itself as 7.10 with VER and at startup!
