Your config.sys file is usually used to set up your DOS to be able to run your Windows.
Mine looks like this:
DEVICE=C:\DOS\SETVER.exe
DEVICE=C:\DOS\HIMEM.SYS
DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.exe M9 NOEMS
DOS=HIGH,UMB
DEVICEHIGH=C:\DOS\ANSI.SYS
SHELL=C:\DOS\COMMAND.COM C:\DOS\ /E:256 /p
BREAK=ON
REM BUFFERS=50
FILES=60
LASTDRIVE=E
STACKS=9,256BUFFERS=10,0
This is a pretty standard setup. Read your readme files and change your configuration to the way you want your system to run, such as changing your buffers or stacks.

Thanks, Tom. I can't get to windows. I noticed your example doesn't show ipshlp.sys. This is how mine looks:
DEVICE=C:\DOS\HIMEM.SYS
DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.exe
BUFFERS=15,0
FILES=40
DOS=HIGH,UMB
LASTDRIVE=E
FCBS=4,0
DEVICEHIGH=C:\WINDOWS\IFSHLP.SYS
STACKS=9,256When I start up, I get the message, " bad or missing ifshlp.sys. error in config.sys line 8. What do you think? Thanks, Lindsay.

I think your ifshlp.sys is bad or missing! ;-)
Well if you have a temporary swapfile its not necessary, so you can delete the line (or put REM in front of it).
If you can restore the file IFSHLP.SYS that would be better.
It provides support for 32bit disk access, which speeds up Win3.11

Thanks, Sodesh. I removed the ifshlp line and no longer get the error message. Now, after " himem testing extended memory, done", I just get a flashing cursor. What do you think? Oh, right. " I think you've got a flashing cursor!" Lindsay.

my ifshlp.sys is missing my friend delete it by accident how can i setup the ifshlp to my computer now?

my ipshlp.sys file has gone missing and i just installed a new operating system. How do i copy it to the windows directory when i cant get into windows, it doesn't seem t work when i try.
