Having big problems connecting a 486\Win 3.11 to the Internet. I got the modem working ok and can connect to the service provider, using Trumpet Winsock. But I can't get any further, browsers don't seem able to recognise the connection. All I want to do is get mail - any ideas would be welcome.

who is your provider?
are there any error messages?
which browser are you using,,iex4.0??3.0my 486/win3.1/iex4.0 works great on the internet. if you can connect to the service provider, thats your mail right there, you can check it with them if your account is with them.
if you have internet explorer, check its internet options/connections.....make sure the check is for another isp or dialer and not microsofts dialer
a bit more info will give more options to figure this out

Which version of Trumpet winsock? For some reason, Version 3.0 doesn't seem to work for me, but 2.0b works beautifully. Also, see if your internet provider has a pre-configured dial-up script for Trumpet.

Hallelujah! problem solved - thanks to Doug who must have found my address here and mailed me a link. I'm mentioning this here because I mailed him back with profuse thanks for the successful solution but my return mail got intercepted by a spam patrol - apparently one of the servers that my reply passed through has been originating spam, so they're being blocked.
The link enabled me to get a copy of IE that contains it's own dialler - downloads onto 4 floppies so it's real convenient to use on an old 486 - and installed and set up without a hitch. So if you read this Doug, many, many thanks!

You think that's something...well, then check this out!!!!!
I got a Gateway 2000 80386SX with 191 meg hd. I installed US Robotics Speedstar 14.4 PCI modem (pci vers 1.0 which used the back end of an ISA slot or VLB "VESA" slot)into VLB 1.0 slot and it works. A VLB 1.0 slot looked liked two ISA slots in-line and a VLB 2.0 slot looked like a ISA slot and AGP slot in-line. The PCI 1.0 standard used the back end of either a VLB 1.0, VLB 2.0, or ISA slot, but will not fit a PCI 2.0 slot (today's PCI slot). All that said, I got the first version of IE to come with a point-to-point dialer (Internet Explorer 3.01 with Shiva PPP dialer). PPP is the standard internet protocol. PPP=POINT-to-POINT PROTOCOL. Also, it's not using the win31 shell (progman.exe). It's using Calmira 3.02 as the windows shell, the end resulting in Win3.1x looking and acting like Win9x without the memory hog. Go to CALMIRA.ORG to find out how. One more thing. If you don't want to have to type "win" to get to windows when rebooting or turning on the machine, run edit.com and pull up autoexec.bat and type "win.com" in the last line. Exit the editor and save the changes when prompted to do so. The machine now boots to windows without having to type anything. Believe it or not, win3.1 and win3.11 are DOS programs and DOS is the OS and win9x is nothing more than Win3.x with 32-bit extentions with DOS 7.0 on the win9x startup diskette.
