You mean Windows 3.1 for Workgroups?

(which is really not that different from Windows 3.1)

You may find it to be quite a readjustment in thinking, especially if you are proficient in 'modern' versions of Windows. Right click is pretty much ignored, for one thing.

Should be a few tutorials online, and Win3xx has its own Windows 'help' system

Much is similar, but the differences can be.. distracting.

Using Microsoft Windows

But it's not 'Windows 3.1 the operating system'

Win3xx is a GUI (Graphical Interface) that runs on top of DOS - so is Win9x for that matter, although things are a bit more integrated.

Should be interesting providing advice on an interface you've never run - we have some of those here ; )

Heres a basic guide from University of Glasgow Computing Services:

http://www.gla.ac.uk/services/computing/documentarchive/windows/un521.html

which shows the differances in operation

Many of the UK Universities still support DOS & Windows 3.1 becouse it is a cheep and still functional system.

Just curious what kind of work do you do that has tech support for windows 3.1?

It may help all of us to point in the right direction for what info you may need.

You might try and find yourself a copy of 3.1 "i'd more suggest 3.11 wfw" on ebay or someplace and some kind of dos that is compatible like 6.22 get yourself an old computer and install it.

Nothing stimulates the ol brain cells like wandering through 3.1.

I have listed the GLA link on PowerLoad for a few years now, and posted it here without reading DR's post fully till it was to late.

Never mind, it stimulates the brain to notice!

Heh - it speaks well of the guide if it's so often recommended. Didn't realize it was linked on your site also.

I too am kind of wondering just what corp. is willing to offer tech support for the old Win.

I know that for some it's their sole 'OS', probably more so internationally, but the numbers must be very, very small.

Industry figures show that as many as 50 million PCs worldwide are still using Windows 3.1/3.11 and WfWG 3.11. Most in developing countries, but some in small companies in the USA & Eurupe, And that is an estimate! How many are 'Licenced' I wonder...

I get an averadge of 1000 hits a day on PowerLoad in total (My 2 main counters clock 700-800 visits, others are direct access to download files) and many are from company servers. OK I know this is also private users downloading patches from work. I have even logged visits & downloads by IBM & Microsoft themselves LOL! (They know I host many of the older DOS/Win files)

"I have even logged visits & downloads by IBM & Microsoft themselves"

hehehe...imagine that.

Cyn,

If your boss has a working DOS/Win3.1 machine, tell him you need another machine to work with. The learning process can be a little bumpy at times and you'll need an additional rig to play with and fix if you do something wrong.

Try Windows help as well. Also the manual that was shipped with it was also a good resource. Must be a pdf version loafing around the internet.
