Hi,

I am using an nVidia TNT2 (32MB) graphics card with Microsoft Windows 3.1. In VGA mode, it works fine, but if I use SuperVGA 640x480 256 colours (from the svga.exe file from Windows 3.11), the picture is really screwed. If, however, I use SuperVGA 800x600 16 colours, it works fine.

All I want is to use SuperVGA 640x480 256 colours, but I can't get it working :(

I *can* get it to work using nVidia's own drivers, but they are really buggy and frequently crash the OS.

Attached is a picture of the screwed up screen, compared to the proper screen.

The monitor used is LG 15" StudioWorks 570LS.

I tried MSD and it reports the video card as being "VESA 3 Compliant". I tried SciTech Display Doctor but it says "Cannot find compatible SuperVGA card."

The monitor is definately capable of showing 256 colours as it can display up to 16.7million colours in Windows 95 and upwards. It can also display resolutions up to 1024x768.

I hope you can help.

Thanks in advance.

Addendum:

I have tried it with another monitor, NEC, with the same problem.

Do I need a software based VESA driver or something? Although MSD reports the card is VESA3 compatible...

Thanks

That's not an option. I need to use it on ATI and nVidia systems, hence the need for a working generic driver.

Also nVidia is not providing any support for the 3.1 drivers.

I just tried it on another machine, with an ATI Radeon card, and again, the screen works fine on 16 colours, if you up it to 256+, it screws up.

I have a feeling it's something to do with the refresh rate setting....is it possible to change the setting in Win 3.1?

Thanks

All you need is the right Video driver...I would try 16 million color ,Instead of 256...

Thanks but I'm trying for a Generic Driver if possible, because it will be used on different graphics cards, and must be at least 256 colours.

I'm almost convinced that it's the refresh rate that is the problem, but I can't find a way of changing it in 3.1.

Any ideas about changing refresh rate in Windows 3.1? Maybe editing an .INI file?

Or does anyone know the default refresh rate for the SuperVGA 640x480 256 Colours driver?

Thanks

Have you tried the SciTech UniVBE VESA 2.0/3.0 TSR, which is now 'no-longer-supported-ware' from their site? The SciTech Control Center allows you to change refresh rates for your display setting.

Hi,

I tried that, I get "No compatible SuperVGA chip detected!" although if I check the compatible chips, the nVidia TNT2 *is* an option there, but it won't detect it.

I'm confused :(

I should imagine the nVidia card is newer than SciTechsoft drivers which were devoloped some time ago, probably for 8 or 16MB

More than likely. So is there any way whatsoever to change the refresh rate?

What is the refresh rate used for the standard "SuperVGA 640x480 256 colors" driver anyway?

Odd. Both monitors (and graphics cards) are definately capable of 60Hz.

Anyone found a way to change the video refresh rate using the standard SVGA driver?
