Hi,
Is there any graphics driver for Windows, any version, that can use the mode 320x200, 256 colors?

As far as I know the lowest resolution for Super VGA 256 Colour is 640x480 unless someone wrote a special driver for 320x200 Mode.

No Standard version of Windows 3.1x or Windows for Workgroups has this Mode as standard.

Err, JR, only heard of ppl wanting to go up in color depth and resolution, never heard of anybody want to go down...

Unfortunately, it seems however we complain, the win3.x standard vga driver only supports 640 by 480 at 16 colors...

Now it is entirely possible for 320 by 200 at 256 colors.... problem is, Windows is never designed for it (ok maybe win3.0 but thats about it)

But then of course I could be wrong

Have looked at Microsoft TechNet CD for info on 320x200 Mode 256 Colour SVGA Driver, and no such driver exists, other than a bespoke driver perhaps!

Win 3.x run well in the mode 320x200, there are CGA and EGA drivers for this, only Win95 and later seems to 'need' 640x480.
Now, there is no need for SVGA. That's the point - 320x200x256 should work on a standard VGA card. I don't want to go down in resolution, but I want 256 colors in VGA. It is not impossible, but I think it ends up in that I have to write my own graphics driver.
How the heck that is supposed to be done one may think.

Hi,
My Question is the same as JR's above, but I found the answers to be a little confusing. So, I'll be somewhat more direct in explaining what I "need".

I recently purchased an early 1990's model High Deifinition Systems computer that runs on windows 3.1. Everywhere I go on the internet, whether I'm trying to listen to a WAV. file, view an MPEG, or access streaming audio and/or video, I get a pop-up message that say I need to "Set Systems Configuration to 256 colors to view this. Yours is set at 16"
Can anyone tell me how to do this, or if it can be done?
Thanks for any help you might give to this problem.

If you have the earler Windows 3.1, You can download the 256 Colour SVGA Driver from my resource site http://www.powerload.fsnet.co.uk
Microsoft have for some reason known only to themselves, withdrawn it from thier FTP Site. (I think becouse it was being download by Windows 9x users by mistake, so don't rename it, withdraw it!)

Thank you for your e-mail message.

It is not just a case of downloading the SVGA.exe file, You need to copy contents onto floppy disk, then run Windows Setup. Select Have Disk, then 256 Color SVGA 640x480 Driver. Windows will then copy files onto your hard drive, and install driver for you. Only then will you have 256 Color Support.
