I recently tried moving my Win 3.1 system from 16 colors to 256 colors. I went through the normal BS, like installing the driver. When I restart I get an error message saying I can't start windows. To fix this I did the norm and went to /windows/setup.exe. My monitor is an SVGA and I know it can support that many colors because I put Windows 95 on and had 16-bit color. How do I change to 256 colors on my Win 3.1 system? Thanks, Nick

You went through the normal BS of installing the driver for your Video Card or Monitor or both? The video card drivers are the important ones for changing to 256 colors, if your video card is capable. Try changing to 256 colors with 640 x 480 and see if that works.

Hi nick175044: All I can say is that unless you have the install software for your video card, you might be stuck to only running with VGA in 16 colors through Windows setup. Your monitor is capable of higher graphics, but your video card doesn't have to proper drivers to go to anything higher than basic VGA in 16 colors. Good luck. Z

How do I know what type of Video Card I have to try to find the driver? I reloaded Windows 98 and am stuck at 16 colors. Is the driver that same as the Adapter?
