I just installed win 3.1 on a 386 I first formated the comp with format c: then I installed it and the installation went well. Except for it never asked me for the 6th win install disc. I was wondering if someone could tell me why when the comp starts up it says invalid system disc please replace. There is no disc in the drive. I tried to make it boot the c: first then the floppy but that didn't work so I tried disabling the floppy drive and that didn't work. So I thought I would try reinstalling win 3.1 but I cannot figure out how to get into dos to erase the other windows, or to even see if win works. So my problem is basically that when the comp starts up it says there is a disc in it when there in none. The drive was working just 2 min before when I installed win 3.1. I am pretty lost any help and pointers would be greatly appreaciated!

did you install DOS on the hard drive? Win3.x is not an operating system, it needs DOS to be installed first.

The previous post is correct you must first install DOS preferably v6.2 before you can even think about installing windows. DOS is the operating system windows is a graphical user interface (GUI). If you dont have a version of DOS look through some of the previous posts on this forum there are plenty of places to download for free. Hope this is helpful
