You never answered my questions here

I take it from this post you are doing hardware raid?

When you say they are seen in setup do you mean in the bios summary screen right before you boot into windows?

By compmangement you mean Disk Management?

Dear Mr. Wanderer,

Existing information :-

Working on IBM Server x3550 M2, RAM 4 GB, Already Installed two disks on bay 0 and 1 of having Sata/SAS Disk of 500 gb and always blinking all together. In disk mgmt. i am not able to see the second disk capacity... I think it may be raid 1.

I took two fresh hard disk of 500 gb SATA/SAS and placed in bay 2 and 3.

I started up the server and then went down to setup and got seen the all the harddisks showing there and then i came out the boot setup and then reboot the system. the moment server started out and i checked in disk management ...there is only c drive of 474 gb and cd drive letter.

i need the help in restoring the two harddisk in compmgmt and wants to expand the capacity of C drive.

(For Example - C drive capacity is 474 gb + 500 gb + 500 gb =
- C drive total capacity will be 1474 gb)

I hope you will understand what i require.

Secondly, i just want to let you know.... i am a fresher for win2008 r2 server. I need your kind help by step by step configuration so that i also learn something.

Awaiting for your kind help.

warm regards/deepak gupta

Dear Wanderer,

As i am reading the blogs of deadlydog and yours reply, I think i am having hardware raid. The moment system is getting on... the green light of the both disks keep on blinking all together. when i check the disk management and there is only one disk in disk management as (474 gb as c ) drive and a cd drive letter.

Sounds like hardware raid.

But it does not sound like you went into the raid bios and initialized the drives.

You will not be able to expand the existing mirror set. Raid doesn't work that way.
In other words " C drive capacity is 474 gb + 500 gb + 500 gb " is not correct and you can't do. You are trying to link a mirror with two addtional drives. You never mix fault tolerant disks with non fault tolerant disks. If you do you lost the ability of what disk failover [raid] does for you.

You have two options,
bring up the new drives as a mirror set and assign a drive letter to it. Use the new disk by either moving user info/data to it or use ntfs junction points to creat links to the new drive for storage from the existing drive.

backup the server including system state [a couple of times], put the new drives in and wipe out the raid1. Use all 4 disks and create a raid5 which will result in 1500gig. Install the OS fresh and then do a restore from backup.

You have to get into the raid controller and initialize the new drives before they are seen in Windows Disk management.
