User Profile Error and Temporary Profiles

August 31, 2012 at 12:34:27
Specs: Windows Server 2008 R2
Small network with Windows Server 2008 R2. All clients are Windows 7 Pro 32 bit. We had this same problem with Server 2003. All user profiles are supposed to be roaming are set up and initially work just fine. After just a few weeks some users are getting either the message that their user profile service failed the logon. User profile cannot be loaded or that they are being logged on with a temporary profile. All the research I have done points to issues with the local maching but I can never find the entries I am supposed to be looking for in the registry. I have yet to fine a profile entry with .bak at the end of it. The only solution, if you can call it that, I have found so far is to create a new profile on the server for the affected user. That becomes very tiresome and annoying for the end users and for the administrator. Does anyone have any ideas why this is happening and what to do about it.
Thank you!!

One thing I found that helps with user profiles is to make sure that the same user password combinations are in the user accounts on the local machine. That has saved me alot of headaches.

With roaming profiles, over 200 end users and 100 workstations that is a lot of username and password combinations to put in each workstation. Is there an easier way to monitor this?

Maybe that would work. I never tried it.

I feel your pain with this issue. I was recently having this issue aswell, only thing i can suggest is ensure that you have the correct permissions set up on the shared drive, i tend to give the user and the admins group full access. If/when this issue happens i recreate their profile on the local side before the server side, this normally fixes it.
