Do I need a proxy server?

Since we are moving to windows server 2008, and it doesn't have ISA server, I am wondering if I need a proxy server. I am getting sonic wall to replace the software ISA firewall, so is a proxy server needed? Are people installing these? Are they buying ISA server?
