XP clients lock up accessing shares

I have a strange problem with my server and thought you may be able to give me some insight.
My network consists of a cable modem going to a FreeBSD box which acts as a router/firewall to a switch. There are several XP boxen as well as a server running 2003 Standard.
My problem is that when any PC tries to view a share on the server, explorer.exe locks up on the client machine. On the client, if you kill explorer.exe and restart it you can then view and use the share all you want for a period of time. After a while however it reverts to it's previous state and will lock up again.
I assume my problem's fairly unique because I haven't found any useful information on the net. If you have any advice I'd really appreciate it.
