Hi,

I have a Windows 2003 server setup with 2 XP workstations connected as a workgroup. The Workstations can access shared files on the server. However, when I search for either workstation on the network, the workstation is found but then when I try to connect I get the following message:

\\workstation1 is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.

The network path was not found

I have shared folders on both workstations with full permissions set. But I still get the above message when trying to connect to either from the server.

Help?

Because it is a workgroup and not a domain, you need a common user account/password on each of the three machines.

i.e. The administrator account on the server is not the same administrator account on the workstations unless the password is exactly the same.

Second network path not found may be a WINS problem. Try accessing the workstation shares by their ip address instead

\\192.168.0.2\sharename for example

By default NETBIOS over TCP is not enabled - check all three machines to see that they are set properly.

Hi WINS is not the problem, XP and 2000 machines and domains do not use WINS anymore unless you tell them to, 2003 DNS can dynamically update its self, negating the need for wins, WINS is purely for pre 2000 machines.

Maybe you have not shared the drives or folders on the xp machines, if you havent enabled file sharing then this is you problem,

if the server is not a domain controller then the xp machines do not have to join a domian or have any users or passwords set up, you can just let all users change files by using the account everybody.

I have to ask why you would have a 2003 server without running a domain. Sort yourself out with a domain and then it should be a lot easier.
