Hi all, im very new to using WINS. Well, heres whats going on.
I read online that WINS lets you map and connect to unc paths when connected to a vpn over the internet. i have a workgroup.
the reason why i wanted to do this was because when i was out of town and connect to my servers back home, i wanted to be able just to use my mapped drives (//NetworkServer/MegaDrive and not //132.383.22.12/MegaDrive). this also goes for remote desktop connection as well.My Setup:
Netear router - set's dhcp, ip reservation
4 network servers running windows server 2003-
NetworkServer
MediaServer
WebServer
DatabaseServer(the ip address for all computers are reserved by mac address)
everything seemed to work, i went to a local starbucks, connected and tunneled with vpn, and the mapped drivers worked, but remote desktop connection did not, or the websevrer on http://WebServer/website1. i used the IP address instead, and it worked.
(http://132.383.22.13/website1)but heres my problem, now that the WINS server is on, i am having the same problem on the local workstations. the mapped drivers work, but remote desktop conection or the web server does not accecpt the unc path name, but it does accecpt the ip address. any clue?
the NetworkServer is the WINS Server (132.383.22.12), this server gets its ip and dns from the router but the WINS is manual config to that ip (132.383.22.12). all servers and worksations are set to that aswell.
NetBios over TCP/IP is also enabled.before i setup the WINS server, everything worked locally.
i have searched all over and have found nothing. so, thanks in advance to all who can help...
THANKS.
