Windows Updates...How often?

Hi everyone. I need some opinions. I'm the lab technician for a company and I maintain about 10 servers, both 2000 and 2003. Each server also has 4-6 ghost images of different setups. My task is to come up with a schedule to update all the images on all the servers.
My question is - How often should windows updates be run on the servers? I want it to be often enough so I don't get too far behind, but not so often that its just a waste of time to do. I have other work and can't spend all my time updating the images. Any input would be great. Thanks in advance!

One way of looking t it, is only patch on the critical updates, or the ones needed for your servers. But when you do, do all the updates on that server. Also depending on the downtime agreed for this. I do mine on what comes out, & I got 200 Servers from NT4 up to W2k3.

The best you can do is install a SUS (Software update service) server which will automatically patch your all servers. You can download this from internet it is free.. This should solve your problem.
Cheers!!!!

I agree.....SUS is definately the way to go. However depending on your environment it can be a pain in the backside to set up - working in a mixed Novell and MS environment makes it a pain!

If SUS doesn't work out for some reason I would suggest checking for updates at least every two weeks. Updates are released on the second tuesday of every month. If deemed necessary though Microsoft will release a patch when it becomes available.
