I am planning on implementing a Windows Update server in my company.

We have a main site where I work and then we have 25 different sites around the UK. All of the main servers are located at the main site but all of the different 25 sites have a domain controller and DHCP server (it is a one domain company). All the sites connect to the main site via leased lines and use a Proxy server based at the main site to connect to the Internet.

So here is the scenario I want to create. I am building a primary update server based at the main site that will connect to the Internet and download all windows updates. I would like to install the update service on all of the 25 domain controllers around the group, and have all of them syncing the updates overnight from the main server based at the main site (after the first sync there should not be too much to transfer). I would then want all of the windows based computers based at the main site to update via the update server based at the main site, and all of the computers at the different sites to update via the server based at their own site.

So far I cannot figure out how to get this to work. I can implement a Group Policy so that all of the computers can update off of the main server based at the main site, but cannot figure out how to get them to update from different servers.

Does anybody know if this is possible?

All of the sites have different IP ranges so is there anyway of implementing this by IP range? i.e. computers with a 10.15.0.0 range update from say http://10.15.0.0 and all of the computers that have a 10.7.0.0 range update from say http://10.7.0.1

(I think I should mention Group Policy is not my strongest subject, but should be able to work it out).

Any help would be gratefully appreciated!

Cheers

Nick

This is a basic GPO question. You'd do it how you'd do any other GPO. If the sites are broken up into separate AD sites, apply the GPO at the site level. Or break the computers up into different OU's. Or filter using groups.
