The server is just set up as a file server only, but i did run the security wizard from the service pack, if that makes any difference.

the xp machine is set up as standard from the wizard.

both machines go through a d-link router

if more infor is needed where can i find this in windows server 2003?

You need to create an account on the Server for each PC that will be connecting to it.

Is this a domain or workgroup?

The windows server is set up as a workgroup.

I have created a user account (by using local user and group)and set permission for user
I also created an account using stored user names and password found in the control panel.

Each account must have a duplicate account by name and password on both the client and the server. This account must have the proper NTFS and Share permissions for the files and folders being accessed.

I have set up an account on the xp machine called test and with a password of test.

on the windows sever i've created a user account (by using local user and group)and set permission for user (user name is test and password test)

I also created an account using stored user names and password found in the control panel.

I have connected another xp computer to the network and the two xp machines work fine on network place and can share there files but they will not connect to the sever.

what services on the windows 2003 server have to be running for the xp computers to connect through my network place?
