I installed windows server 2003 in my office of 5 computers. I have a t1 line with an internet static ip but enabled with dhcp for the five computers. I'm installing active directory and dns on the same sever. The server is set up with a static ip on the lan side. I set up the 5 computers to still obtain the ips automatically from the router but the dns part i put the lan static ip of the server. I created users and they are able to access the server, but since they now they log in to the local dns server for name resolution their email outlook program doesn't send and receive email. Can anybody help and tell me what i'm doing wrong.

when you say doesnt send and receive mail, what do you mean? Is there an error message in outlook or can it not connect to the exchange server? Can you ping the server by name? When you setup outlook and enter the username and exhcange server name, does it resove the username?

No. We don't have an exchange mail server sorry for the missing info. We have a pop3 email service from our isp. When on the workstations lan settings i put the ip of my internal dns server i have this problem, but when i change it to an internet dns ip the e-mails go in and out but i loose connection to the domain. Please tell me i don't need to install an exchange server for this to work. Once logged in onto the domain, everything works fine except the pop3 accounts in outlook. Thanks in advance for your help.

Are you entering the external mail servers name or IP address in the outlook config? If name, try swapping that out with it's IP address.

Is your DNS forwarded to the internet DNS you mentioned? If not, forward it to that address and see if that doesn't resolve the issue.

Did everything. When configuring forwarders i get the following error: the server forwarders cannot be updated. the zone already exists. I have a registered domain name ex. xxxx.com for which my pop3 settings are mail.xxxx.com. When i created active directory and install the dns etc. i used xxxx.com for the domain as well. Do you think this could be a problem. Maybe i should change my internal domain to something else ex 0000.com instead of xxxx.com? Still this server doesn't need to be seen from the internet now. You told me to change mail.xxxx.com pop settings in outlook at the workstations to the ip address instead of the name and it worked but even though outlook worked with the ip settings instead of the name when i open explorer and type in www.xxxx.com (ex. of my registered domain), it doesn't go or when i type webmail.xxxx.com. It's like a loop since my server is called server in the domain xxxx.com. Any suggestions. Thank you very much for your help and time in advance.

Something is still worng with your DNS then. What DNS entries do you have on the workstations and have you setup a gateway? Try enting te gateway into the workstations for a proxy address

I will start from scratch. Guide me. I will reinstall the server 2003. I'll set it up with a static private ip, default gateway and its own ip as the dns since i'll install active directory on it. When i install AD it will ask for the DNS and i will tell it to install and configure it for me, with my registered domain (ex. xxxx.com) Then i'll disable dhcp on the router and install dhcp on the server and configure it with the pertaining options for scopes (003 router-for default gateway, 006 dns servers-with this server ip, and 015 Domain name-(ex. xxxx.com) for the dhcp to assign the clients. Then i'll create a user under AD and log in from a workstation that has ip receiving automatically from my dhcp server. I'm sure everything will work except emails going to mail.xxxx.com pop/smtp settings or going to my website www.xxxx.com. Is there anything in between there that i'm doing wrong? Should I change the domain name to something different? or on the dns server, for the forwarders when i put mail.xxxx.com with the ip, it doesn't let me, it says zone already exists.

I dont think there is any reason to change the domain name.

Is there any disadvantages if i change my private network's domain name from example xxxx.com(public registered for e-mail and website) to xxxx.local? In other words is it necessary to use my public domain in my private network?
