Dear experts,
I am really need your help to configure my Lan network.My Lan have 4 client computers using windows xp, and 1 server using window server 2003. I already install the domain name server according to the windows guide help however when i try to connect the client to server e.g. change the network Id of client computer from WORKGROUP to my domain for example HIGHTECH.local, the client computer couldn't detect the domain name and reported the domain name not found error. I did reinstall both server and clients but have the same thing occured. Could anyone help me to fix this problem. Thank you so much
Popo

Start here.

Consider a bookset like the 70-29x group and be prepaired for a lot of studying.

Probably you have not configured the workstation to use the server for DNS or have not configured DNS on the server.

The workstation is not going to find hightech.local without a DNS server that 1) knows the IP 2) Is available and 3) the workstation knowing where to find it.

Start by pinging the server by IP. if you cannot ping, then there are other issues - maybe subnet (maybe not!). But if you can ping by IP then 99.99% it is DNS problem.

One thing that worked for me when I had this problem once, on the workstation set a static IP with the same network address as the server (ex.

Server = 192.168.1.1 255.255.255.0,
Workstation = 192.168.1.x 255.255.255.0)
and make sure you have DNS setup on the server and input the servers IP under the DNS server when setting up the static IP.

Let me ask:

1. Did you successful install Windows 2003 Server and promote it to Domain Controller with DHCP & DNS running?

2. If so, than all you have to do is on your windows XP Pro client machine, right click on "my computer" and than "Computer Name" change the button workgroup to "domain" and enter "yourdomainname" without the .local okay. If you have the .local with it, then you will not get the user & password prompt. Once you see the prompt, enter user and password for administrator account.

Than it will restart the PC and you rebooted and log in with domain users account or adminstrator account just to test.
