windows 2k3 domain rename

i set up my domain to be called XXX.org. i later figured out that i should use a different extension like .local instead. i am trying to rename the domain without demoting it and then promote it again. i looked in the past articles on how to do this, it said goto help- rename a domain controller, i did that, now the DC is named xxxx.xxxxx.local but the domain is still .org. how can i change this? does anyone have any ideas? thanks in advance
