I recently set up a windows 2003 server. It's only job as of now is to share two folders. One called "music" (containing over 5000 mp3 files), the other "videos". Everything worked wonderfully for about two weeks. I mapped network drives from two of my PCs. When I double-clicked either of them, the folder's contents were displayed immediately. This is good. Now, the "music" folder, with the same amount of stuff in it, is soooooo slow. I double click on the network drive mapped to it and the explorer window freezes for about 15 seconds, then it does the flashlight for about 20 seconds. It is this way with all 3 of my Windows XP Home PCs trying to connect. To me, it's obvious that the problem is server-side. What in the world. This sucks.
The network traffic monitor on the w2003 box goes from 0% to less than 1% when a client is trying to access the "music" share. I'm not sure if that is normal. I have no idea. Thanks.

Alot of it has to do with the amount of listing in the viewing folder. I know for example that when loading event viewer on a windows 2003 server that sometimes this can take quite awhile simply by the amount of items (not necessarily their size) that it has to load. Try this for just a bit of amusement, create 10 folders and split the mp3's among them all from the w2003 server. Go back and then try to view the folder from the other computers. Also it helps if the thumbnails option is not selected but something like details is there instead. Let me know how it goes. Thanks.
