Hello There,

I have a very weird problem with our Windows 2003 Server. We are drastically running out of space on the C:, even though it has a 8Gb partition. The only programs installed and running on this drive are Sophos Anti-Virus and Veritas Backup.

I have removed all non essential files, deleted all temporary files and even deleted the service pack caches in an effort to free up space. Now here comes the weird part, I have right clicked all the files in C: to find out what disk space they are using and it amounts to 4.9Gb, now the C: summary says that the 8Gb drive has 212Mb space left. I have checked all this again and it does not make sense to me.

We are using RAID-5 I think and have 3 other drives running off the same machine. Is there anyway to free up any spac eon the C: before it ceases to operate? Is it possible to allocate some space from the other drives and add it to C:, I understand a software program like partition magic will not work in this situation?

I will be checking this site all day while the server is online so please if anyone has any information on how to solve this problem leave a message and I will reply as soon as I can.

Thanks in advance,

A desperate ERH

Hi,
All I can think of is the Page File. Check how big it is, as it shouldn't need to be 4GB! (if that's that problem of course). Also, enable showing hidden files and folders, and system files, and see if you can find anything that might be using up all the space.

Good Luck,

Rob

Thanks for the advice Rob, I've moved the pagefile from C: to another drive but I will have to wait until the working day is over as a reboot is required. I will post my results tomorrow morning.

Thanks for the reply

Great. I'll try and think of anything else that it might be.

Till then lets hope :)

ERH, if you want to add more space to your c: partition then you can use a program called Acronis Partition Manager (now called acronis disk director suite). Unlike Partition Magic, Acronis allows you to resize partitions on a server. Its not too expensive and has saved me hours of frustration.

Thankyou for all your help. I managed to free up around 2Gb deleting old logs and moving the pagefile to another drive. This has bought me some time so I can have a look into the cost of that Acronis Partition Manager for the long run.

Thanks again!
