Hey hey hey! Just might have been wrong about you after all.

Decide now if you're going to pursue certification. If so, I'd recommend picking up a set of the core requirement books. If you're gonna learn it, might as well get certified and increase your potential income.

Each book is also available individually, but you save money with a full set.

Pick this up as a reference for the basic TCP/IP knowledge you'll need.

Notice the used copies for sale.

I also highly recommend checking out the interactive training from this company. Very hands on and a good guide from my experience. I picked up their ISA stuff, and if their Windows 2003 stuff is as good, well worth it.

I also highly encourage you to get hands on practice in a lab environment. You can create a network of virtual machines free using Virtual PC 2004. You'll just need XP and Windows 2003 software. Trial versions freely available will do if you're okay for them to cease functioning after so many days.

If you want your lab to be more permanent, which is an extremely good idea, you can get just about all microsoft software from the Action Pack subscription I mentioned in the previous post. For $300/yr., it's an incredible buy. You get Win2k3 (reg and R2), Exchange, SQL, XP Pro (10 licenses), Visio 2003 Pro (10 licences), MOM Workgroup edition, and much much more. As new software like Vista and Office 2007 come out, you'll get it, too.

Don't forget about Microsoft's free Virtual Lab series as well. Prebuilt VM environments complete with lab manuals to learn about all kinds of things.

Best of luck, and no hard feelings!

The Sybex "Mastering" series is really well written. Lots of interesting examples, explanations from history (i.e. why this feature came to be like it is), and accurate. Not sufficient for certification training, but if you've got a life beyond computers, you will enjoy the style.
