Hello, I'm trying to set up fax sharing with WinFax, with a Windows 2003 server as the fax host.
I want to enable the built-in firewall under 2003, but add WinFax as a service so that its traffic within the office won't be impeded by the firewall.
Can someone possibly tell me which TCP and/or UDP ports need to be made available for WinFax to talk with the client workstations on the same subnet?
Thank you.

winfax and most fax sharing programs are horrible, the better thing to do is allow your users on your network to login to the server under specific rule sets (login groups, etc, allow them to have remote user access and let them login via remote desktop or terminal services, tell them to save to one location on their HD and share that directory to their username/password only on the network and setup their login.cmd script to mount that directory, then they can fax their stuff out that way, via the server, directly, thing is you need the programs that they are using (word, excel, etc) to allow winfax to convert them properly.
fax sharing is horrible in winfax, and it also runs it own stuff as a service in windows NT, you cant just make it a service and expect it to work the way it was intended to.
i use talkworks pro on 2003 server (yes it installs in 2003 server but not on 2000 server), as my voicemail server AND my fax server (and as a backup i use the built in fax service comes with the OS)
hope this helps

Situation:
You would like to know which TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) or UDP ( User Datagram Protocol) ports are used for Fax or Message Sharing.Solution:
There are no fixed TCP or UDP ports when using Fax or Message Sharing. WinFax PRO/TalkWorks PRO uses Microsoft DCOM to accomplish peer to peer faxing.DCOM dynamically assigns one TCP port and one UDP port to each executable process serving DCOM objects on a computer.
For more technical details on DCOM, please see:

Now I have a question for you :)
I also installed winfax 10.03 on server 2003. First of all I cannot install the winfax printer not a big deal but I would like to have it available. Second of all I set the software to automatically receive then go back to it later and it is not set to auto receive. It seems to turn off auto receive whenever it feels like it. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.Chris
