history:  I installed a second network card in a windows
2003 server for vpn access, later I decided to put it on a
linux box, so I uninstalled the VPN role and removed the
network card.

problem:Now my windows 98 clients can't access the
shares on the windows 2003 server

diagnostics:It worked yesterday, it's definitely related to
installing/uninstalling the NIC.  I can ping the server from
win98, in fact, I can use the network shares if I access
them through the IP of the server.  Once the win98 client
connects to the IP of the server, it can then see and
browse the server from the network neighborhood.

workaround: I added the following two lines to my logon
script:
net use x: \\server_ip_address\some_share
net use /delete x:

After this script runs at login, you'd never know the
problem exists.  My OS X Panther client can't access the
share anymore either, but fortunately I'm the only one
with an OS X Panther client.

The server is available via the network neighborhood from
XP or NT4,  and the windows 98 clients all have the AD
client installed

Try install the DS from the 2000 CD, the reason windows 98 does not support Kerberos ver 5 without installing the DS client, windows 98 uses NTLM ver 1 by default, what happens windows 98/se attaches to the domain, it's does not become part of it. what happens when a 9X boxes logins into 2000/2003 it's looks for Kerberos 5, if it does not find it , the server will use NTLM ver 1, backwards compatible.. Not a good thing

So you have a few options:

1.)Move to 2000/or XP
2.)Install DS client on the 9X box
3.)or Give-up...

If it worked prior to removiong the second NIC, it sounds like name resolution. If you ping the server by its name from the offending Win98 client, what happens. Do you have a WINS server? A workaround would be to add the server to you HOSTS file.
