hello,
i know this question has been asked many times but this is rally baffling:
i have a win2k3 server running ADS and DNS, win 2k and xp machines can logon but win98's cant - i get the error "no domain server to authenticate....". here is waht i have tried on the win98 machine:
1. logon is client for MS networks and i have put the domain name there in properties
2. in net neighborhood identification - workgruop has been changed to domain name
3. dns- i have the dns ip entered
4. have tried changing ip of the win98 machine and have also tried assignning static ip
5. tried installing netbuistill no luck!! i can ping the server and can see it in network neighborhood too. cant do a nslookup - says command not found and am not sure if i can do a nslookup from a 98 m/c or not but - well as u can see i think i have tried pretty much everything i can think of. pls help!!!!
thanks in advance.

no you cant do a nslookup on a 98 client
one feature about 2000 and xp pro is if the network server cant authenticate (but it detects ther server anyhow) it will used stored credentials.try going on your 2k3 box and go to services
restart netlogon service then try to join the domain
also check event manager on the 2k3 machine for any errors

On your Win98 box try deleting your hosts and lmhosts file in case they have legacy references to old DC's.
You may need to set up WINS on the Win2k3 server to support your Win98 clients. (Not sure about that now)
Ensure that you have netbios over TCP/IP enabled on your Win2K3 server.

Check you authentification mode!
* Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows ME support only 14-character passwords. or
* Reset account

add the account under "users" in "AD users and computers" and give it a password. Win98 uses the netbios name of the server. So when you right click network neighborhood (under win98) and choose properties and then the primary logon type is "log on to microsoft network"...look at the properties of this and the domain name should be the netbios name of the domain controller...
