The question you asked is gigantic in nature. A forum may not give you all the information you need. Here is some info:
They aren't even close to the same. The two OS's have completely different kernels to start (core of the OS). Starting with 2k, MS introduced active directory as the new domain stucture. Win95/98 dont natively support active directory and in fact MS has dropped support for 95 and if i'm not mistaken about to drop 98 support if they haven't already. They're just getting old. Win95/98 can network with 2k3 on a very basic level. Depends on what you want to do. A lot of new software wont even work on a system that isn't windows 2k or higher (MS office 2k3).
