Win2k3 Server hangs-up often

Our file server is a Dell PowerEdge 2600 running Windows Server 2003. We have people using Windows 2000, and Windows XP connecting to their files via mapped network drives. Often the network will partially freeze up. It will allow users to browse their network files, and open any file except a Microsoft Office file. After a while it will eventually get to where it won't even let you view your network files at all. It can't be logged into when it does this either, it accepts the uname and pass, then sits there mouse visible and movable with the desktop, but nothing ever loads. The only way to fix it is to do a hard-shutdown. This has been going on for a few weeks now, does anyone have any ideas?

Have you looked at the Event Viewer log files on the server? Is anything relevant being shown?
When you say it can't be logged in, what error do you get? What happens?
Have you made sure you've got all the latest Critical, Optional, and Hardware updates for the server? Also, make sure the BIOS is up to date as well...
