have setup up windows 2003 server with couple of xp clients.

The server has to 2 nics. Both of them have different ip addresses.

Nic 1(Lan1)

192.168.0.5
255.255.255.0
192.168.0.1 (netgear router)
dns: isp assinged

Nic 2 (LAN2 internal lan)

10.0.0.1
255.255.255.0
192.168.0.5
dns:10.0.0.1

Server has a dns and dhcp running and AD.Dhcp is only serving clients on Lan2.Clients can connect and can log on ot he server. They are assinged an ip address and default gate way.

cleint Pc

10.0.0.2
255.0.0.0
192.168.0.5
dns:10.0.0.1

i have setup dns forwaiding on the dns server to use my isp servers. In dhcp under server option i have setup the router to be 192.168.0.5 and dns to be 10.0.0.1.

I am able to browse the internet from the server but cant from the clients. The client can ping 192.168.0.5 but not 192.168.0.1.so it seems like a routing issue.i am new to win2003 and cant seem to figure this out.I have tried various posts on google but none seem to work.

Do i need to setup RAS and if so what i need to look out for?

Any body here have any ideas what i am doing wrong.Would appreciate it.

Many thanks

Might want to hit those chapters on TCP/IP again.

Assuming you want pc internet traffic to go thru the server, the pc's gateway would be the servers nic on their subnet. In other words the pc gateway would be 10.0.0.1 and the pc would be in the subnet range of 10.0.0.x.

To route between server nics you need to engage RRAS. Not doing so will result in the pc network not getting to the internet.

Hopefully you have placed your ISP's dns servers ip listed in the Forwarder's Tab and not in forward lookup zone.

Since the pc can ping the router, and we know you are not routing thru the server, I suspect you have everything plugged into a common switch. Proper config is router to nic1 in the server. Server nic2 to a switch with pcs plugged in. Never would the router, pcs, and server all be plugged into the switch if you want internet traffic to do thru the server.

Give a person a fish, they eat for a day. Suggest they internet search and they learn a skill for a lifetime.

Many thanks for your reply

i have changed the router ip address in dhcp to 10.0.0.1 now the clients have

10.0.0.2
255.0.0.0
10.0.0.1

i have installed rras with lan routing.
i can ping my other nic 192.168.0.5 from clients but not my gateway 192.168.0.1 (my router ip address) so no internet browsing.

my nic 2 on server is set with

10.0.0.1
255.0.0.0
192.168.0.5

nic 1
192.168.0.5
255.255.255.0
192.168.0.1

Do i need to make any changes to RRAS .Do i need to setup static routes or anything similar ???

Many thanks

"The server has to 2 nics. Both of them have different ip addresses."

There's your mistake. If the server is going to be dedicated as a RAS server or ISA server solely, by all means, go for it. As soon as you start doing stuff like AD on it, that's a recipe for disaster.
