RE: Discuss 'How do I add a WinXP Professional client to my SBS'
Hi all,
I have Win SBS 2003 server running a small 10 No. client computer network in an Education I.T. Dept. and recently one of the client computers broke down. It turned out to be the M/b so I replaced it and rebuilt the computer with the original parts. But when I tried to reconnect it to the network by right clicking 'My Computer', then 'right clicking 'Properties' which took me into 'System Properties' then opening 'Computer Name', clicking on 'Change' and clicking on 'Domain' and typing in the network Domain name.
But when I clicked on 'OK' get the ERROR message 'cannot find the Domain'! I have tried repeatedly but cannot get the Client to connect to the network.
I decided to setup the Client computer using 'Static' IP, Subnet mask, Gateway and DNS addresses. This worked and the Client computer connected to the network.
However, seeing as Win SBS 2003 is issuing IP addresses via the DHCP I had the feeling that sooner or later there would be a problem if the server DHCP issued the IP address of the Client with the static IP address on it to another of the Client computers the one with the static IP addresses would not be able to connect, and that appears to have happened.
Therefore, I would like to have this client computer connected to the network using the server DHCP but how can I do that. Can anybody give me a solution to this problem or let me know what is causing the Client not to recognise/connect to the Server or is it the other way around, the server not recognising the Client?
Here are some stats: Clients using Win XP Pro, the Server (DHCP) is showing that it does have all the correct settings to enable connection to the Client computer, the network is wired through a switch, the server is a one Nic network with the router/gateway firewall (server Firewall not on). If anybody requires any further details about the Win SBS 2003 network, please contact me and i will let them have it by return.
Regards
Gerryw

Put the ms servers ip in the dns entry in the workstation tcp/ip properties dns tab.
First step when you got the message about server not found would have been to check the ip address and dns server listed via ipconfig
Imagine the power if you knew how to internet search
