Hello all and thanks in advance for any advice. We have a Quad Core IBM box that we have our CRM software installed on. We have Citrix installed on this box that about 30 "in-house" users use to connect to this box. When we start running reports and/printing, the CPU fluctuates between 75-100%.
My question is: One of the managers does not use the Citrix client to connect, he uses remote desktop. It seems as though we do not crash as often when he is not here at the office and logged in through Remote Desktop. Is this logical? Does Remote Desktop use more resources or is it more prone to causing this type of freeze ups??
Please let me know your opinions/reasons of this.
Again, thanks in advance,
John

RDP bypasses Citrix. He is just connected to a terminal session. I would think that is not a good thing for him to be doing while Citrix is also controlling/utilizing terminal sessions. Citrix runs on top of TS. His session is missing out on all the goodies the Citrix ICA client provides.
Is this also your dns and AD server? Running exchange?
"We have Citrix installed on this box"
That was a really bad design. You should have one or two member servers that run your TS/Citrix sessions and they then connect to the CRM server. You have the user TS/Citrix sessions competing with the CRM software for CPU/Disk/Memory access.

Hello Wanderer and thanks for the reply.
This server only houses our CRM software and citrix. We have an NT server as our DC but I am currently setting up a new 2003 server that will be our DC w/ AD and DNS. Should Citrix run on this new box and then connect to the CRM server?
Could his RDP session cause conflicts with Citrix that could cause the crashes? They are totally random and on a couple of occasions I was still able to access the perf monitor and see that neither the CPU or Mem was out of control.

It is only recommended that TS and Citrix run on a member server not a DC. DC's have a bunch of overhead with AD stuff.
Since TS and Citrix use the local cpu/memory per user its not recommended to share the hardware with other apps.
When the server "crashes" what exactly happens? Any clues in event viewer?

Hello Wanderer,
Do you think that this manager using RDP is causing the server to crash? He has been gone all week and we have not went down at all (we would have had at least one crash by now). With him usng RDP, he is using the resources of the server (just as if he was on the console) and everyone else using Citrix, they are using their own local resources. Is this correct?? Could his RDP session be be "stealing" resources from everyone else's Citrix sessions?
When it crashes, all of the users' citrix sessions freeze and sometimes I can get on the console and look at a few things bfore I have to reboot. There is nothing in the event log or perf monitor log that would lead to suspect anything wrong.
Thanks for the advice,John
