I have a DC on WIN 2K3, and two workstations- XP PRO and WIN 2000. I have local printers on both workstations. I am having an issue sharing the printers over the network. When I browse to install the printer, I get to see the Client Name, but when I try to expand that to see what printers are available it will not allow me to even though I have set them as shared on the respective local machines. Is there a setting in 2k3 or on the local machines that I need to enable or another protocol that is required? I have File SHaring installed on both devices. Are there any major issues with 2k3 and 2000? if it means anything both local devices were recently removed from an NT Active Dir when the NT Server died-crashed.
ANysuggestions would be great.
MIKE

Try to install as \\client\printer name. (If you have spaces in the name, use double quotes)
BTW, did you check list in directory and then try to find them in the directory?
Peter

Yes I did find them in the add printer search through AD option. When I try to add the printer it says access is denied. I made sure that the users account name on AD was given permission to access the shared printer and it was, it still says "access is denied"..
MIKE-what now?

you may already have an answer; but if not, you will need to have printer and file sharing installed under the network properties - same place you find the tcp/ip settings. Same protocols have to be installed on both the server/client, i.e., tcp/ip and/or netbeui. Also, use the same workgroup name.
You also need to setup an account with the same logon as the clients under local users/groups. Same logon and password. (on the server side)
Then look at your shares under and find print$, open its properties and then add your clients user names (which should be in the list if you already performed the above).
When accessing the shared resource (on the server), you will need to logon to the resource. You can type //server_name/printer_share_name from the "RUN" prompt to access it. Of course, you may be presented with an access denied here or a logon screen. If you get access denied, try logging onto the server itself through your workgroup.
Hope this helps!
Matt
