I want to know what is LDAP? I have searched even from google but all very difficult to understand.There is no such precise and simple defination that what is LDAP?

Does't LDAP is used in windows for varifying the credential i.e ( username and password) or it is used for establishing sessions between client and server ?.It is confusing me.please enlight on LDAP in simple words.
