"is it possible to play games"

Yes most games will play fine (better even) on WinS2k3. This is especially true for newer games.

"and surf web in win server 2003?"

WinS2k3 is designed to be a web/file/print/... server. So surfing the web is definitely not a problem :þ

IS this windows good?
Yup the best so far.

WinS2k3 makes for an AWESOME desktop os. Windows ME can't even compare with WinS2k3. But if your unfamiliar with Windows NT and configuring your services you may be in a little over your head at first. www.blkviper.com is a good place to start when it comes to setting up your nt box.

Hope this helps,
Sandman

you should have dumped me a very long time ago, it was one of the worst release's ever. (not quite as bad as bob, but close).

my advise is to go with xp pro, win2k03 server is way more than the home gammer would ever make use of, (even you pro gammers).

and not all of your games will play on win2k03, esp if they have any age to them, it is not really made for that. (yes i know it CAN be tweaked, etc. but why bother).

your p3 with 320mb of ram will be pushing it's self to the limit with a full blown server os on it.

you should use the os for what it's made for, you'll find you will have less problems that way, (not to mention the money you'll save).

I'm running the free 180-day evaluation copy of Win2003 from
https://microsoft.order-5.com/windowsserver2003evaldl/.

I'd say I got what I paid for.

Gaming in Windows 2003 would be a problem, as the major video card makers like ATI and nVidia don't have drivers for 32-bit Win2003. And in the case of ATI, they're not going to. Kinda stupid, as Win2003 has DirectX 9.0b and Media Player 9 available through Windows Update. ATI should change their motto to "ATI - We Just Don't Care".

See: http://www.ati.com/support/infobase/4227.html

On my machine, with an ATI 9700 Pro, and the ATI Catalyst 3.9 drivers for XP, running dxdiag shows only DirectDraw, DirectSound and DirectMusic working- no Direct3D Acceleration and no AGP Texture Acceleration. With the 'ATI Catalyst 3.9 for XP' drivers I get 120x/sec refresh rate.
The default drivers that Win2003 originally installs only give 60x/sec refresh and the same poor dxdiag results as the XP drivers.

Surfing is no problem. The browser is IE6 and does all the stuff any other IE6 does once the "Internet Explorer Enhanced Security Configuration" settings are changed to Windows NT defaults. Windows 2003 asks if you want to do this immediately after installation.

"Internet Explorer Enhanced Security Configuration" is a Windows Component and can be found in Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs > Add/Remove Windows Components.

Note that audio in Win2003 is *off* by default at installation. Administrative Tools>Services>Windows Audio to turn it on.

Like I said, why jump through some hoops to make it do something it's not designed to do?

He deff should dump ME, but not to win2k03 server.

HMmmmm, well put it this way, i use windows 2003 server for games, webserver, faxing server, email server, and thats not the end of it...

i can play games on it just fine, no problems, and almost every windows XP driver will work on it for video cards/modems/etc.

I have actually found that 2003 server is MORE compatible then windows XP with driver compatibility, hence my supra USB v90 56k modem had issues in windows XP/2000 with winfax/talkworks, gave tons of comminicational errors, and which i dont get in 2003!

the OS is well worth the purchase, but most end consumers will rather bite on windows XP coming with thier crappy store built machine then purchasing a more stable OS.

ATI doesn't have to care about releasing drivers for windows server 2003 because their drivers work perfectly in win2k3.

You dont have direct3d or agp texture acceleration because you didnt ENABLE it. This windows isnt for the beginner. To enable hardware acceleration you have to go to display properties -> settings (tab) -> troubleshoot (tab) and move the acceleration slider all the way up. Also, in control panel click on directx and make sure that under the direct3d tab you have "Allow Hardware Acceleration" checked.
Oh, fyi I am running an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro on an Athlon XP 2000+ with 512mb PC2100 DDR. Runs great, best windows since Win2k first came out... just have to give it a little shove to get it to do multimedia as well as XP does (remember its the same OS, just with more security... all the multimedia features are there)
