Comment:

I have an old computer that I put Windows Server 2003 on.
Can you tell me if these are possible, and what I can use:
I would like the server to have the http server, which at the moment, I have Apache setup on it (and working).
I would also like it to be an email server. Just for 1 email address.
And, finally, if possible, I would like it to be an ftp server.

This would all be for 1 site (maybe 2 in the future). There will be little traffic. I have a dynamic IP address, but I have registered for one of those internet services to help with that problem.

I need a very easy-to-setup, free email server and ftp server. I do not know anything about how to setup this stuff.

Also, do you have any ideas about virus protection and firewall?

Thank you in advance, and any hints/tips would be greatly appreciated.

PS, I have tried setting up Apache James, but I never could get it to work.

use microsoft IIS server, this is very easy
and it has a FTP serer SMTP server (mail) and a http server
just goto:
add/remove programs then Windows componets on the left then install microsft IIS services
then once that is done right click on my computer then mangage >> then services at the bottom, then select your options, forward your domain name to your IP address and your set
i just got into this so i dont know how to setup a mail server but i think it is pretty easy if your know how to setup a ftp and http server

to be quite honest, there is no way in hell I would use a 333mhz as a server especially with 2003. You probably can't fit more than 128MB RAM in it. If you plan on getting any hits on the site then it will probably lag horribly.

From experience, I would look into getting at least an 800mhz with about 512MB RAM.

As for anti-virus, definately check out AVG (www.grisoft.com). I really like ZOne Alarm as a firewall but it has some issues with server 2003. You might want to check ebay for a used D-Link router, which will let you use high speed and they have built in hardware firewalls that stealth your computer from hackers. You can get one for 20 bucks or so on ebay.

Definately take your time and plan some cost saving steps, but please don't use the 333mhz! You'll thank me in the long run.

No, this is a site that is only for friends & family. I am not expecting more than 2 people on it at a time. Besides that, I am too broke to pay for a server. That is why I have a crappy computer to use as one now.

Thanks for the input. I'll be trying to set it up.
