I currently use WSUS to apply Window Updates, but a reboot is still needed to apply the new downloaded update patchs. Is there a way i can force reboot machines? I am not much of a scripter, and i am unsure if it is a group policy option.

I want to be able to achive this remotely with out having to leave my office and vist the end users machine.

Thank you.

even if you did it in group policy you'd have to make sure group policy got updated, something that often requires a reboot.

you can reboot computers from the command line.

from the command prompt use the shutdown command

shutdown -r -m //computername

That will restart the computer after a 30 second delay, you can make it zero seconds by using -t 00
if you have a list of computers you can make a batch file and do them all just by running the file.

Mmmm...before I go on, it would appear i do not know what i am doing in WSUS. How do i force installs of Window Updates? I see the required updates, but "needed" is the way it is labeled. How do i force an install of these updates?

I solved my issue with a force reboot. I achieved that by using MMC, and connecting to another machine via the Management plugin, then i just drop through some sub-screens, and hit a shut-down key. I select the options i want, and the remote machine reboots, but the updates did not install. Would this be an AD issue or a WSUS policy issue? I know they're so many possiblies, but where should i start to look first.

There's an even easier way to reboot remote coputers type in shutdown /i into your command prompt and you'll get a gui that makes it very easy to reboot remote computers.

As far as WSUS, honestly I'm still learning. I know that there is a way to tell it that a particular update must install by a certian date, but that's all I know at the moment.

Look at the Administrative Template options for Windows Update. You can control installation behaviors including scheduling installation of updates, and forcing reboots or annoy the crap out of your users to reboot until they do. It's all there.

Virtual labs with manuals for you to play with Microsoft products in general.

I'd recommend at the very least doing the Group policy labs.

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/tr...

There's a specific lab for SUS and MBSA. That should cover how to manipulate Automatic Update settings via GPO.

P.S. This all only costs your time to do it. No fees required to access these virtual labs.
