DNS problem

Dns works fine with in work

When I connect though a VPN I can put in the internal IP of a client or server and it works but I can'y for exampe put \\server1 though a vpn now I rang our provder and they say I have to point the Ip they gave to us to access the VPN back using dns records

Any help would helpful

\\hostname isn't DNS. That's WINS. Do you has WINS server? Are VPN clients getting configured with it?
